Course Description

Many managers and technical professionals in the electric power industry do not have a background in electrical power technology.  They need to be conversant with the details of power system components and networks as well as operational issues such as economics and stability.

The Electric Energy Essentials course provides participants with an overview of the electrical power network and its operation.  The scope begins with the history of the development of electric power and continues through energy resources, network components and system operation.  Specifically, following explanation of the fundamentals of three-phase AC power, the course discusses energy resources, including renewable resources, and power generation along with environmental impact.  Electric power networks, as interconnections of components and customers, are then discussed along with the issues of power quality and safety.  The course concludes with operational issues of network control, blackout avoidance and modern deregulated networks.
